10 dead as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid convoy

(CNN) -- Israeli commandos killed at least 10 people in pre-dawn raids on a flotilla of six ships carrying aid for the Palestinian territory of Gaza early Monday, the country's military said:

"During the incident the soldier's lives were in danger," said a statement from the Israel Defense Forces.

"They were attacked with severe physical violence, including live fire, weapons, knives and clubs.IDF spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibowitz said light weapons and handguns were confiscated. "We basically encountered a lynch," she said. "We had to control this violence."

Actor Dennis Hopper dies at 74


Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper has died at the age of 74 following a battle with prostate cancer.
Known for such cult classics as Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet, Hopper embodied the image of the Hollywood icon.
Hopper died on Saturday morning surrounded by friends and family at his home in Venice, California.
He was last seen in public in March when he was honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Pakistan, US agree on Waziristan operation

WASHINGTON: The US military chief said on Sunday that he could not discuss his plans for combating Fata-based militants with the media but would like to do so with Pakistan’s cooperation.
Diplomatic sources in Washington, while talking to Dawn, also confirmed this, saying that Pakistan had agreed in principle to extend its military operation to North Waziristan and other areas identified by the Americans as militant hideouts.

Agatha leaves 82 dead in Guatemala, El Salvador

San Salvador, El Salvador (CNN) -- The remnants of Tropical Storm Agatha were headed into the Caribbean Sea late Sunday after leaving behind more than 80 dead in Guatemala and El Salvador, authorities in those countries reported.

Most of the dead were in Guatemala, where heavy rains triggered mudslides that collapsed homes and forced thousands to evacuate. The country's preliminary death toll was 73 on Sunday, with 49 of those reported in the province of Chimaltenango, said David de Leon, Spokesperson for the National Commission for the Reduction of National Disasters. That toll was expected to rise, he said....

Renowned businessman kidnapped from Karachi

KARACHI: Famous industrialist and businessman Riaz Laalji has been kidnapped by unknown persons in Karachi on Sunday.
Sources told DawnNews that Laalji returned to Pakistan from Dubai today. He was on his way home from the Quaid-e Azam Airport when unknown men on four vehicles kidnapped him.

158 feared dead in India plane crash

New Delhi, India Rescue teams worked into the night at the smoldering scene of an Air India plane crash that killed 158 people Saturday after the jet overshot a runway in southern India, crashed into a ravine and burst into flames, officials said.

As darkness descended, workers used portable lights to pull charred bodies out of the wreckage outside Mangalore International Airport. All but three bodies have been recovered, said Jeeja Harisingh, head of fire and emergency services.

Eight of the 166 people on board Air India Flight IX-812 survived the crash and were taken to hospitals. FULL STORY

Thirteen-year-old becomes youngest to climb Everest

BEIJING: A 13-year-old American boy became the youngest climber to reach the top of Mount Everest on Saturday, surpassing the previous record set by a 16-year-old Nepalese.

Jordan Romero called his mother by satellite phone from the summit of the world's highest mountain, 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) above sea level.
He is now one climb away from his quest to conquer the highest peaks on all seven continents. FULL STORY

S. African paper publishes Mohammed cartoon

Once again, a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed has sparked anger and controversy. 

A South African newspaper published Friday a cartoon depicting the prophet lamenting that his followers lack a sense of humor, drawing ire from the Muslim community and fear of reprisal attacks just ahead of the World Cup soccer tournament that is expected to draw thousands to South Africa next month.

Zapiro called his cartoon "gentle," and said he was responding to "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," a Facebook event that encouraged people to flout the belief by devout Muslims that it is wrong to depict religious figures because doing so could lead to idol worship. FULL STORY

Four low-intensity explosions in Lahore

LAHORE: A police official in Lahore says four explosions in a red-light district have caused minor injuries.

Mohammad Shafique said the blasts Friday night were low-intensity and authorities were still collecting information. It was not immediately clear who was responsible. [read full story

US Cartoonist disavows 'Draw Mohammad' Facebook page

WASHINGTON: An American cartoonist whose work inspired the controversial “Everybody Draw Mohammad Page” on Facebook has condemned the effort and issued an apology to Muslims.
Molly Norris, of Seattle, drew a cartoon in April to protest the decision by the US television channel Comedy Central to cancel an episode of the popular show “South Park” over its depiction of the Prophet Mohammad in a bear suit.
In her cartoon, Norris satirically proposed May 20 as an “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day.” An “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day” page quickly turned up on Facebook but Norris, writing on her website at mollynorris.com, said she had nothing to do with it.
